Environment CBL: Report on 'Strategies for Sustainable Growth'

Here is a useful report that was prepared for our Prime Minister on the strategies that Singapore would need to adopt in order to ensure her sustainable growth. There are useful information on the topic of 'Energy Conservation' that you might want to glean and refer to as part of your project work on the CBL theme of 'Environment: Energy Conservation'.

  1. Chapter 1

This chapters talks about Singapore being a business economy and also a Garden City. Since our independent, we had to be able to provide ample jobs for our citizens, while keeping the environment clean. In which, our vision is to make Singapore a liveable and lively city state, one that Singaporeans love and are proud to call home. It would be more challenging to ensure that economic growth does not come at a high environmental price as we have limited land and resources. We boost our resource efficiency. enhance our urban environment, building our capabilities, making a sustainable Singapore .

  2. Summary for Chapter 3.
-It is about the economic growth the problems in the future for the future generations!
1.Our resources are limited, e.g.:Water and energy not grown proportionately with population so is the economic growth.
2.Singapore has to compete with other countries with resources since singapore get almost all the resources from other country!
3.Due to climate change, all cities, including singapore, may experience more extreme temperature.
However, Singapore has clean air, clean water and a lush green environment. It will soon become a beautiful and cosmopolitan global place for us to live. We should also be environment friendly people like we should reduce our carbon footprint!
We must all understand the meaning of global warming and save the earth! So play your part in reducing the use of energy! =)

  3. chapter 5-
traffic is a problem in singapore. roads take up 12% of our land and our transport is responsible for 13% of our energy consumption and 50% of fine particles in the air. so, we will improve public transport, reduce fuel consumption and adopting fuel efficient technologies, and achieve cleaner transport by 2030. the LTA will improve on its public transport (MRT),and car growth rates will be lowered therefore decreasing the dependency of cars. green cars will also be encouraged, and we will work towards the dream of a green city.

  4. Chapter 2:
Singapore has one of the highest density populations in the world so, Singapore has to plan carefully to keep the country going. In order to make sure the country runs smoothly, Singapore follows Long-Term Integrated Planning, a Pragmatic Cost Effective Approach & Flexibility. Singapore has grown to become a First World Country with Clean Air,enough water and energy to meet industrial and residential needs.
Singapore uses Land Use Planning to build many buildings and facillities.
Singapore is also doing its best to control its pollution, water & waste. Singapore is also the first country in the world to use the Electronic Road Pricing(ERP) in order to manage the amount of cars on the road.
One of Singapore's other main aims is o make the country a green city.Singapore is now one of the top few nations in the world with a High-Class Living Environment,Clean Air,Sustainable Water Resources,Recycling and Reducing waste, keeping the environment green and have one of the best transport systems in the world.

  5. Chapter 9:
This chapter talks about Singapore trying to be an environmental friendly committee which tires to make good economy growth and let us live in environmental friendly environment. It also talks about how much money did Singapore spend in doing this. They are also planning to use Singapore's urban land area to build more things.Mainly, Chapter 9 is all about developing singapore for the better

  6. LOLOL!! Guo Jin here. I'll summarize chapter 3! :D
This chapter is mainly talking about Singapore's challenges and goals in the future. The chapter starts by saying that Singapore can lead by example, and can grow in an environmentally friendly manner but we need sustainable development to protect our child's future.
Some of the challenge stated is that our resources are very limited as our population grows, having to compete for scarer resources worldwide, and our environment being at risk. LImited sources such as having to make our country more densely populated and putting leisure and industrial land uses together, which makes it more difficult to keep a high quality clean and green environment, competing for scarer resources as prices will go up as global countries are demanding for more of these resources such as energy, water, when Singapore will have to do more with less in order to continue to grow in the future. Our environment being at risk because of climate change.
Next is the goals of Singapore by 2030, saving as much resources as possible and doing the least damage to our environment.

  7. Chapter 8

This chapter is about how we should improve Singapore’s effectiveness in maximising our resources and make our country self-sustainable.

We need to contribute Singapore’s expertise to help build environmentally sustainable cities across the world.Singapore is a good place for companies and
research organisations to develop and test their
ideas in an urban setting because it has skilled
    people with environmental management and
    system integration expertise. Going forward,
we will continue to invest in R&D and manpower
    development programmes to further enhance
Singapore’s attractiveness as a base for research
and export of new technologies, as well as
    an innovative thought-centre on high-density
urban living and sustainable development. The environmental challenges ahead open up opportunities for Singapore to innovate and create
sustainable development solutions with partners across the globe. Together, we can use technology
to improve lives and protect the environment, not only in Singapore, but across the world.

  8. Chapter 7
The many research solutions Singapore has been using or will use in the near future to be more energy efficient, recycle, controlling pollution, and expand water supply. These solutions include:
    1. Steadily expanding Singapore's NEWater production capacity and distribution network.
    2. Promote the use of recycled products.
    3. Managing noise pollution.
    4. The building of Jalan Bahar CleanTech Park for companies undertaking clean technology activities.
There are many more solutions that Singapore is undertaking to be a more energy efficient country.

  9. Chapter 5:
Singapore has built an extensive public transport system over the years. Our roads take up a total of 12% of land area. The transport sector also accounts for our energy consumption and the amount of fine particles in the air. There are some things we can do to achieve a greener, cleaner an more convenient transport system. There are some key recommendations that we think we can achieve or improve in to make Singapore a greener place. LTA have made and is still making changes to our public Transport System. LTA have plans to encourage more people to use public transport. Fuel-efficient vehicles are also introduced in the Chapter. While LTA tries to use in the buses as well. They aim to target lower amounts of fine particles in the air. They will try different types of ways to conserve energy, together with the rest of Singapore.

  10. Summary for chapter 7.
This chapter talks about how we want to build even cleaner and more resource-efficient industries which will open new economic opportunities for Singapore. We hope to further improve energy efficiency in our industries, promote waste minimalisation and recycling it, enhance water security and effiency, control pollution and promote clean technology and sustainable urban solutions.

  11. Chapter 4.
Singaporeans today live in good quality housing and have access to modern amenities.
.Our Water and Electricity consumption rate is high.NEA and PUB have launched major national initiatives to encourage people to reduce their energy and water consumption at home.Consumers need information to make resource-smart purchasing decisions. The government has decided to label the products to provide consumers with more information of the performance of such products. The government has also decided to set minimum performance standards to remove inefficient models from the market.NRP was launched in April 2001 to let PWCs to distribute recycling bags or bins to household in HDB and landed estates.Singapore enjoys lots of sun year round and urban environment companies are offering unutilised roof space for solar panels.

  12. Summary fo Chapter 2:
This chapter explains Singapore's past on facing overcrowding in the city, poor living conditions severe lack of infrastructure, but after multi pronged effort to guide development and support of people and businesses, it has become a now more better city than before through:
    1.Land Use Planning
    2.Pollution Control
    3.Water Management-NEWater
    4.Waste Management-Public Cleanliness and Hygiene
5.Energy Policy-Reduce traffic cogestion in overcrowding prone places by introducing the ERP (Electric Road Pricing)
6.Transport Management-Introduction of Area Licensing Scheme (ALS) to charge cars for driving into the city and Vehicle Quota System (VQS) to regulate the increase in the number of vehicles
7.City Greening-Setting aside land for parks and built parks and nature areas for plants to build Singapore into a Green City
8.Noise Management-Industrial areas, MRT tracks and major roads built far away from residential areas
Through all these efforts, Singapore now becomes a high quality living environment

  13. Chapter 4
We can sustain the resources by conserving the energy and having campaigns such as the 10% challenge. We also use energy saving devices to make energy, such as the solar panel. and that in the next ten years, singapore will be very green

  14. Hi, im going to summaries chapter 9
Chapter 9 talks about Singapore making and effort to be environmentally friendly. The Community Development Councils also known as CDC will promote environmental awareness and action to more than 2 million people through programmes under their local district plans. Schools will step up their efforts in teaching the students on environment education. Communities like NGOs, SEC WWS and NSS are all putting an effort to conserve the environment and our resource. This communities have hosted events to cut down on energy and water wastage and find ways to reduce and recycle.

  15. Chapter 8:
As a small country with little resources, we try to be more innovative to become a leader in resource-efficient technologies and maximize the use of them.
Two ways to achieve our goals:
-Develop key capabilities and technology and Singapore as a knowledge hub provider of service.
Water technology and energy-efficient building technology are ways we can develop capabilities and technology. We are able to sustain growth within land area because if urban planning and design, as well as water sensitive technologies and urban design. We have skilled people to invest in R&D This will help us with our attrative base for research and export. Together, we can use technology to improve lives and protect the environment, not only in Singapore, but across the world.

  18. Chapter 9:
This chapter mainly talks about developing Singapore development and being environment friendly and how we save water and keep our environment clean and we should a;; do our part to make singapore the better.

  19. Chapter 5:
This chapter is mainly talking about Singapore's Traffic Problem. Singapore remains congestion free, but our roads take up about 12% of our total land area. 13% of the whole energy consumption and the 50% of the fine particles (specifically PM2.5^1) in the air is taken up by the transport sector. We want to achieve a cleaner, greener and more convenient transport system by 2030 in three ways. The first one is enhancing the public transport, secondly improving resource efficiency and last but not least achieving cleaner transport system. We could enhance the public transport if more people travel using the public transport.A single deck bus transports up to 80 passengers while an average car can only carry 5 person. But it uses nine times the energy a bus uses and 12 times that used by a train. The government has set aside more than $40 billion to improve the public transport to achieve the target of having 70% of journeys by public transport during morning peak hours by 2020.Land Transport Authority (LTA) will continue to upgrade the rail network from the current 148km to 278km by 2020. LTA will make more bus lanes so that the bus travels is faster and more convenient.LTA will also provide real-time and multi-modal public transport travel information through online. Then it will be easier for the public to plan their journey more conveniently. We can improve the resource efficiency of the transport system by managing the growth of private transport, improving fuel efficiency of both private and public modes of transport, and pricing fuels correctly.Encourage more people to use fuel-Efficient vehicles.People who wants an environmentally-friendly cars could buy the Hybrid car.If all of us choose to use public transport more, drive less and adopt to the cleaner and more fuel-efficient ways, we can look forward to a better living environment for all in the future.

  20. Chapter 6:

This chapter is about Singapore’s future goals in creating more parks and leisure-based options, promoting skyrise greenery, transforming our waterbodies and protecting and enhancing our biodiversity. Our parks will also have more environmentally friendly features, and be more accessible to the residents.

  21. Chapter 8
-It is about our resources our clean and green city and also develop more buildings which will aid in conservation of the environment.
-More gardens and park connectors shall be built and more of those structures of those in marina Barrage
-And also conserve our supply of water and increase the amount of water technology

  22. Chapter 6: It is mainly the government aiming to have more parks, green-roof, high-rise parks, and much more like trying to connect Singapore's waterbodies and enhancing the biodiversity like the the wetlands in sungei buloh with higher technology.
